Moving house with a pet

If you’re moving house in South Yorkshire you’re bound to be excited about what the future holds. However, as exciting as this new chapter in your life is, we all know it can be a bit stressful getting there. Relocating is often a headache, but when you add pets into the mix it can become a whole different ball-game.

HOW TO MAKE MOVING HOUSE WITH A PET EASIER…

Don’t let the thought of moving house with pets put you off. Instead flip it around and look at ways in which you can make your life easier.

In an ideal situation you would have a friend or family member who can look after your pets on the day you move. This keeps them out of the way and can be the most stress-free option.

If this isn’t something you can do, then dedicate one of the rooms in your old house to your pets on moving day. Get this room empty beforehand and on moving day put your pets toys, bed and food in here. When the chaos of moving starts, you can put them here out of harms way.

WHAT ABOUT ID TAGS OR MICROCHIPS?

Once you have moved make sure you update their ID tag or microchip as soon as possible. Remember that your new location will be new to them too and you don’t want them getting lost while they’re out and about exploring! Over the years we have heard stories of pets taking a wander back to their old home, so you want to make sure they’re able to be reunited with you as soon as possible. The longest trek on record was from a home removal in Sheffield to a new family house in Rotherham. How did the dog make it down the Parkway?!

THINGS TO AVOID WHILE MOVING HOME WITH A PET IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE…

When it gets to actually moving them to your new house, don’t feed them just before everything kicks off. They’re unlikely to feel comfortable during the journey with a full stomach.

One of the first things you should check at your new property is that the garden is secure. The last thing you want is for them to be able to escape through the fence and go off exploring your new neighbourhood. Trust us… this will definitely make your moving house day more stressful.

It’s likely that your pet might not settle into their new surroundings straight away. If they should misbehave avoid telling them off in the new home especially if they are doing something that is out of character for them. The chances are they’re just ‘finding their paws’ in their new home and no-one can really blame them for that!

Relax.. it won’t belong before you’re all settled in and enjoying life again.
